Some people DO "get it"
Coca Cola "gets it". Just watch this commercial they have out for the olympics. Just beautiful!
*unfortunately YouTube removed the video due to cracking down on copyrights but you can still view the commercial by visiting the Special Olympics site at this link: http://www.specialolympics.org/Special+Olympics+Public+Website/English/Press_Room/Global_news/2008+Olympics/New+Olympics+Coke+Commercial.htm

Some people just don't "get it"
You might have been hearing the chatter about the new movie by Dreamworks coming out called "Tropic Thunder" starring Ben Stiller, Robert Downey Jr., and Matthew McConaughey in which they make fun of a developmentally challenged character named "Simple Jack". The promotional poster they put out originally is enough to make a person sick. They did pull the "Simple Jack" promotional materials and website due to the huge outcry by disability rights activist groups. However they still don't see anything wrong with the movie. They say it's just a comedy; that we should "lighten up". They see nothing wrong with making fun of developmentally challenged people and calling them "retards". (of course you all KNOW how that word makes the hairs on the back of my neck stand at attention!)
Anyways, I'm not going to say much more on the subject other than encouraging everyone NOT to watch this movie. If you feel strongly about the subject and would like to take it a step forward, I would encourage you to write a letter to Dreamworks as well as your local newspaper. Let them know your disapproval for their hateful language and blatant ridicule of persons with disabilities. There are some petitions and facebook groups you can join. And I will include links to this post as I find them for any further information. The first link includes a copy of the original poster depicting "Simple Jack" with the tagline, "Once upon a time ... there was a retard".
I personally think the whole lot of actors and execs at Dreamworks should be charged with hate crimes. At the very least they should be forced to volunteer with persons with disabilities to enlighten and educate them about the value of every human being!

Apples!
Yesterday we picked over 10 gallons of apples from our transparent apple tree! And there's still more up there! We made a whole bunch of applesauce, 6 pies, and I'm straining juice to make apple jelly. It has been a family affair with Colin and Kristina peeling, and I have been cutting and preparing. Owen helped pick the apples and Brant is always ready with the next apple to pass to the peeling squad :)

Summer fun :)
I know I know, I haven't posted much lately (sorry Mom and Oma! :) Summer has been busy and fun with not much computer time for me. We've been enjoying the outdoors. We went to Dinotown the other week and I was interviewed and we were on TV :) (Shaw channel 4 for those in Chilliwack). We spend a beautiful afternoon at Cultus Lake with Beppe and Gramma B (Colin's Mom). Gramma andGrampa B came for a visit last weekend and stayed at our house for a few days and we had a great time with them. We've also been enjoying our backyard pool on nice days and the kids love going outside every chance they get! I've been trying to be a bit of a homemaker, baking bread when I can. I'm hoping also to make a bunch of jam with raspberries and blackberries when they are ready. Starting next week Friday I will be doing daycare on Monday and Friday afternoons for the neighbours (their girls are the same age as Brant and just a bit younger than Owen). We are looking forward to Brant's birthday on August 17 and then my brother Greg is getting married on August 29 and I have to still figure out what song I'm going to sing (they asked me to sing during the signing :)
Well I'm posting while dinner's on the stove so I'd better get back to it! Hope everyone's having a great summer!

Hi I'm Katrina, wife to Colin, mom to Kristina, Brant, and Owen. This blog was created to keep family and friends updated on the goings on in our lives ... the joys and challenges of raising three children. You will often see me posting about Down syndrome awareness as our son Brant has Down syndrome.
